Fred and Peter Done, along with their family, owners of Betfred, and the Coates family, owners of bet365, secured the second and third positions, continuing their presence among the UK’s top taxpayers.
The Times has unveiled its annual tax list for 2025, revealing the individuals who paid the most in taxes over the past year. The gambling industry is prominently featured in the top three spots.
Fred and Peter Done, along with their family, owners of Betfred, and the Coates family, owners of bet365, secured the second and third positions, respectively, continuing their presence among the UK’s top taxpayers.
Chris Hohn, founder of Children’s Investment Fund Management, was the only individual ahead of the bookmaker owners, having contributed £339.5m ($423.15m) in taxes to the UK Government. Betfred’s owners paid £273.4m, while the Coates family paid £265m.
Although both families have consistently ranked among the highest on the list, bet365’s owners maintained their position from last year, having paid £375.9m according to the 2024 list, while Fred and Peter Done and family moved up two places with their payment of £204.6m in the last edition.
This comes shortly after bet365’s FY2024 financial report, which showed significant profit growth, alongside a notable decrease in Denise Coates’ pay during the period.
Betfred’s most recent annual report for 2023, released in July, reported a 25.6% increase in turnover, but a sharp 98.7% decrease in operating profit.
