The District of Columbia has posted its July sports betting results. During the month, its total July handle reached nearly $27.3m.
DC players last month and walked away with a large chunk of winnings as well. Players in DC took home close to $22m in total wins during July.
Up until mid-July, players could only access mobile sports betting through FanDuel. The operator is a current partner with the DC Lottery.
The District of Columbia has allowed legal sports betting since 2020. The city council recently approved a budget to make room for additional operators to come to DC.
Following the approval, several sports betting operators took up residence in DC mid-month, a contributing factor to the substantial year-over-year handle boost. Last month’s handle rose by more than 250% when compared to productivity posted in July 2023.
Newcomers to the area included DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars. BetMGM went live in DC July 15. To celebrate the launch, BetMGM held a citywide rollout event at its Nats Park sportsbook.
Altogether, DC’s sportsbook generated close to $3.9m in revenue for the month of July.
Heavy hitters last month were FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM. During July, FanDuel yielded a $10.2m sports betting handle.
BetMGM and DraftKings grabbed the second and third place spots, bringing handles of $3.3m and $1.2m respectively.
Since the federal government lifted its ban on legal sports betting, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) six years ago, more than 35 states have established legal and regulated sports betting markets.
