betPawa in collaboration with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), has formally introduced the Locker Room Bonus (LRB), a direct-pay program, to the nation’s recently formed Regional Women’s Football League.

This is the first time that a women’s league anywhere on the continent of Africa has benefited from the Locker Room Bonus, betPawa’s flagship sports impact initiative.

This is more than just sponsorship. Showing up for women, sports, and all Malawian girls who have ever dared to dream bigger than the sidelines is the theme of this programme.

Through this arrangement, players and technical staff will get instant win bonuses for 270 official league matches, totaling $157,000+ (MWK 273,240,000) that will be directly invested in the game. Before players even step off the field, they will receive their mobile money payment for their performance. This eliminates any administrative delays and waiting weeks for recognition. Each squad will receive MWK 1,012,000 for each victory, with 23 players and three staff members receiving MWK 44,000.

A demo match was held in Lilongwe, Malawi to commemorate the event and demonstrate the Locker Room Bonus’s operation. Following the final whistle, players—a diverse group of young talents, community leaders, and faces—swathed their jerseys, gave it their all, and watched as their cell phones lit up with MWK 17,300 transfers.

Media, youth representatives, municipal politicians, and prominent people from the sports and development sectors were present. However, the players in the shootout—a vibrant blend of opinion leaders, football fans, and influencers—were the real stars. They transformed a straightforward penalty shootout into a time of pure joy and purpose by laughing, supporting, and encouraging one another with each kick.

Raquel Puig, Head of CSR & Sports Development at betPawa, stated, “We talk a lot about empowering women in sports, but too often it stops at hashtags and headlines. What we’re doing here with the Football Association of Malawi is different. We’re putting money directly into players’ hands, rewarding performance, raising the bar, and backing belief with action.”

Along with Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, Malawi is now part of the growing number of nations where betPawa is implementing LRB in basketball and football.
