Published in April, Normative Ordinance No 615 prohibited the use of credit cards, cryptocurrency, cash, payment slips, or cheques for betting when Brazil’s legal online betting market officially launches on 1 January 2025.
The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) and the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) have both advised their members to expedite the ban on gambling with credit cards. All members of the IBJR have agreed to fast-track this prohibition.
Published in April, Normative Ordinance No 615 prohibited the use of credit cards, cryptocurrency, cash, payment slips, or cheques for betting when Brazil’s legal online betting market officially launches on 1 January 2025.
However, only companies already operating in Brazil that have applied for a betting license will be allowed to continue from 1 October.
Both the ANJL and IBJR have urged their members to voluntarily implement the credit card ban earlier after discussions with the Ministry of Finance. The IBJR, representing approximately 70% of Brazil’s betting market, aligns this move with its broader goal of creating a safer betting environment in the country.
The ANJL noted that almost all of its members have already removed credit cards as a payment option for bettors.
While the official credit ban will take effect on 1 January 2025, the associations have raised concerns about the potential financial harm to players during the transition period from 1 October to 31 December.
“IBJR firmly believes that regulation is the most efficient and necessary way to face these challenges, ensuring the protection of consumers and the state,” the IBJR posted on LinkedIn.
“As the leading industry association, we are fully prepared to contribute to solutions that address both government concerns and society’s demands.”
